Sign-ups that reach their first useful result
People download a shift-work app and stall before it does anything for them. Here is how to find where they stop and redesign the first hour so more of them reach the point where it works.
The problem
Downloads are healthy. Activation is not: most people never finish entering their rotation, and the ones that do take days to bring their team in.
What was really causing it
Setup asks for everything at once: the full rotation pattern, shift types, holidays and teammates, before the app has done anything useful. People stall at the first hard step, which is usually describing a rotation that only makes sense on paper.

What we built
We measure the path from download to first result, watch real shift workers try it, and redesign the first hour around one early win: next week's shifts on the calendar, or tonight's sleep window. Then we measure again.
- Measured Every setup step instrumented, so we see exactly where people stop.
- Observed Short sessions with nurses, crews and on-call staff to understand why.
- Redesigned A first hour built around one useful result, with the full rotation later.
- Compared Activation before and after, honestly reported.
What stays as it is
Your product, your stack and your team's roadmap.
Where AI fits, and where it does not
Little. This is research and design. AI turns a rotation described in a sentence ("four on, four off, days then nights") into a pattern, with the person confirming it.
What it is worth
What comes next
Reminders tied to real progress, and a team setup so a whole ward or crew joins at once.
Questions people ask
- What counts as a first result?
The first moment the app is useful on its own: next week's shifts on the calendar, or tonight's sleep window. We agree it with you before measuring anything.
- Do you need access to our product data?
Event data on the setup steps, without personal details. If the app does not record them yet, adding that is the first step.
- Will the redesign change our roadmap?
It changes the first hour of the product only, and it is measured before and after so the team can decide what to keep.
